Snow Report – Les Deux Alpes 7/12/2017

What a great start to the season!

Les Deux Alpes snow report - Perfectly groomed piste

Glacier 1 in perfect condition – December 2017

It is with great pleasure that I’m writing this first Les Deux Alpes Snow Report. There are much better snow conditions to open the resort this year compared to the last! The glacier is in perfect condition with cold firm/fresh snow that is just a dream to carve down. Beware it is cold up there though! with temperatures reaching the dizzy heights of -20 during the days! Although today is a mild -9 air temperature and less wind than previous days.

Fear not though there are new proprietors at the new Glacier restaurant. You can now go in for a welcoming hot chocolate to warm up and even have a nice sit down lunch. For those of you on a budget there are reasonably priced and good panini’s. Panini’s are 6.5E and Burgers 7E in the snack area and the sit down area I’m yet to try so watch this space!

Snow Conditions

Whilst the glacier is such a pleasure to ski, and slopes are open right down to resort level, I have to be honest and say there are a few spots with rocks showing on the way down! The ski patrollers are doing there best to pick up the rocks. B

ut the snow cover is thin over the ridges where the wind has blown it off, so the machines are struggling to piste without turning them back up again. Having said this there are some lovely pistes as well you just need to ski down the first time with care so your aware of the areas to avoid, go slowly around the edges!

The cannons are blasting to their maximum capacity to rectify this and actually even on the glacier our new 6 snow cannons are working hard! The area between 3200 and 2600 that doesn’t have canons is the rockiest. The rest is great skiing.

The run back to resort is nearly 100% man-made snow and the conditions reflect this. The piste is firm and can feel icy in places but the cover is good and with some good edges and a little technique very enjoyable. If you are a beginner or only just happy on Blue run then I would take the white eggs back down to resort. You can do this right up to the end of the day so you don’t miss any precious skiing time.

What a view

The forecast and whats on

There is a snow depth of 30cm at the top of the resort and a 6cm at the bottom but yesterday they managed to open the Viking beginners run in resort. This is a free button lift for beginners  and is an excellent place to learn. Each day we are seeing new runs open and the resort becoming more lively!

The forecast if for lots of snow tonight and tomorrow. Over 30cm’s of fresh fluffy white stuff for us to slide down! And over the next week Sunday onwards the forecasts are showing continuous heavy snow, at least another 30cm before Tuesday and more after! so we are looking at having a superb start to the festive season.

Next week we see the Rise Festival here in resort with Craig David headlining, what a perfect mix great snow and skiing followed by fabulous music! This event is seen both on and off the slopes with Live Music in the town and parties arranged in the apres ski bars on the hill. There will be late night events as well for those of you with the stamina!

If you need any further information about the snow conditions in resort we are always happy to help. Give us a shout out on social media https://www.facebook.com/tiptopskicoaching/ requesting a pic of a certain area or more information.

Enjoy your time on the hill and #skiwiththebest
